Children Collect Treats for Troops This Halloween!
Local dentist in Madison, WI. is collecting kids left over Halloween candy to send overseas to the troops. Kids will receive $1 for every pound of candy they donate.
MADISON, WI, October 22, 2009 /Wisconsin PR News/ -- Some people might think hitting up a dentist's office for Halloween is a horrible trick, but for many of Madison's little ghosts and goblins; it will be the ultimate treat. Once again, Kammer Family Dental will give children $1 for every pound of candy they bring in on Monday, November 2 from 3:00 pm until 6:00 pm.
This year Park Bank located in the same building as Kammer Family Dental 2275 Deming Way, Middleton, WI will be the drop off and collection place. Park Bank has also created an account for people who would like to donate to help offset the shipping expense. Donations can be dropped off at any Park Bank, make checks payable to "Halloween Candy Buy Back". Mailed in donations can be sent to: Halloween Candy Buy Back, c/o Park Bank, P.O. Box 8969, Madison, WI. 53708
Dr. Chris Kammer of Kammer Family Dental predicts the practice will bring in over 1000 pounds of candy from wide-eyed kids eager to make a buck. Last year, the Halloween Candy Buy Back collected over 750 pounds of candy.
"I'm not trying to end Halloween," says Dr. Chris. "Kids can still have their Butterfingers, their Snickers and Tootsie Pops, I'm just giving kids a chance to have their PayDay and eat it too."
Dr. Chris figures once kids have picked over the good stuff, they're left with a load of candy they'd never want to eat, but they do it anyway, just because it's there.
"Really, who needs to eat an entire shopping bag of candy?-Nobody." Says Dr. Chris.
Not only does this plan allow little vampires and wolfmen to keep their pearly whites looking their fangiest, it also serves a good cause, as Kammer Family Dental will ship the candy overseas to members of the armed forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. Dr. Chris distributes the candy through Operation Gratitude, a non-profit focused on sending care packages to troops.
Founded by Carolyn Blashek, Operation Gratitude aims to remind our troops about their value to the country with care packages consisting of electronic, kind messages and yes, candy."The candy buy back allows our nation's troops to know we're thinking of them, while giving them fond memories of their trick-or-treating youth," says Carolyn Blashek, director of operations for Operation Gratitude. "And the fact that kids sent their own candy makes it even more touching for our nation's troops."
When the candy arrives overseas, grown soldiers-the hardest of hard men-are instantly brought back to their youth.
"These soldiers face horrible situations every day, yet the mere presence of the Halloween candy puts a huge smile on their faces," says Dr. Chris.
Leading a group of over 1000 dentists nationwide pledging to participate in the Halloween Candy Buy Back, Dr. Chris estimates they'll reduce children's candy load by 3 million pieces or so. "The Halloween Candy Buy Back makes kids happy because they get money, parents are happy to be rid of the excess candy and our soldiers get a little pick-me-up," says Dr. Chris. "This program is truly win-win-win for everyone!"
Kammer Family Dental will also be collecting: Beanie Babies or other small stuffed animals, small packages beef jerky, single serving coxes of cold cereal, individual packets of hot cereal, hand-knit/crochet scarves and hats, computer flash drives, lip balm, toothpaste, toothbrushes and roll-on deodorant and personal letters of appreciation to pass on to the troops.
